Crotalus durissus

CASCAVEL
L’unico vero serpente a sonagli “tropicale”.
CASCAVEL
This only real Neotropical rattlesnake is the most widely distributed member of its genre (Crotalus) and it ranges discontinuously in South America, where it occurs in all mainland countries with the exception of Ecuador and Chile. This species inhabits a broad range of habitats, ranging from dry sparsely vegetated stony or desertic areas, to savanna and grasslands. It can reach 180 cm in length and 4 kg in weight. Adults feed on rodents, other mammals and birds. Bite symptoms are very different from those of the other pit vipers and vipers due to the presence of neurotoxins (crotoxin and crotamine) that cause progressive paralysis and sometimes blindness.
